I came from CA, which I think helped a lot. I scored over 700 (and close to 800 on a couple) on my SAT II tests, took the AP classes that I wanted to (Math and US History), not just every AP class in my school; was part of a summer research program at UCLA through NSF; was a freshman at UCLA at the same time I was a high school senior through a special Honors program; was a National Merit Semi-Finalist; scheduled an interview in CA to let Hopkins know it was my #1 choice and why. Extracurricular activities also included secretary of the physics club, band, and orchestra.

My advice is to present yourself with all due enthusiasm (you're you for a reason, right?). You have opinions about who you want to be when you get out of college, and what you want to do to make the world a better place. So make that clear to the admissions committee. The most pervasive character traits in Hopkins students are drive, an awareness of the big picture (in terms of your life and the international environment), and pride taken in every effort. Don't forget to show them that this is a lifetime commitment for you. Not in terms of money, but in terms of a concern for the future of Hopkins. Maybe it's a stretch on the applications, but I promise if you go here you'll want to give back in any way you can. And, well...you'll be in the position to!

As for "what I did to get into JHU," I can't say for sure. But one thing I THINK definitely helped made me was having 2 interns at 2 different bio labs. My second mentor wrote me a pretty sweet rec letter. Overall, I guess my extensive research experience really helped me. Of course, I also took APs, honors, blah blah blah.

What I would recommend: don't apply if you think your college experience will be a breeze. Make sure you visit and understand the school and what it's all about before you decide to come. Hopkins overall is a great institution, but it does not fit everyone.

High scores on SATs help a lot, but they really want to see what you have to say for the $10 essay. There have been many people here who I have talked to and the thing they all have in common is their essay was written about something that was really meaningful to them. That is what the process is all about ... letting the admissions staff know who you are outside of school.
